Nervous Breakdown in 3…2…

1)  The air conditioner in our building has broken again. The building manager has indicated that it will not be fixed until tomorrow afternoon. The high in Nashville is expected to be 99 F today and 101 F tomorrow. I’m going home.

2)  I spilled juice on my laptop this morning. I think I have killed it. I am still paying on it. I am beside myself. It turns on, but then immediately back off. The Geek Squad is sending it to their “headquarters” to see if they can fix it. Any suggestions from you tekkies out there is mucho appreciato.

I have become psychic. I see a cocktail in my future.

  1. Odds are that whatever damage could be done is already done, unless you immediately turned it off and haven’t turned it back on. Didn’t think so.

The tech geeks will shotgun troubleshoot it; replacing big sections with a new part to see if it will come up. If you’re lucky, the motherboard was spared, or most of it. The odds aren’t good. You’re probably looking at a couple hundred $ repair.

  2. Oh NO!!!
I will say it for you …
    Shit.

  3. It’s dead. Pull the drive out of it and send it off to a data recovery company. Buy a MAC this time and back-up often.

  4. Oh no!

My husband has a computer services company (MouseCalls) in Bellevue, just FYI, if the Geek Squad lets you down! They have a free help message board, too, but it sounds like your hard drive did bite the dust. :(

  5. First advice: don’t give it to Geek Squad…

Honestly Exador is probably right. It sucks, but if you’re still paying on it, then it sounds like it is relatively new, so throwing a few hundred toward a new mobo (probably what got nuked) would still cost less than a whole new laptop these days.

  6. Oh, terrible. This is why I forbid myself to drink anywhere near my computer.

  7. Pffft, like a Mac wouldn’t be fucked up if you spilled juice on it. I understand Mac love, boys, but come on, they’re not invincible.

  8. Because Macs are water resistant, obviously.

  9. They are if you get the undercoating and Scotch-Guard options…:(

  10. Hey, he said Mac, not MacK! ;)

  11. Y’all are cracking me up…thanks for the comic relief…

And thanks all of you for your advice… *sigh*

I have taken the position that LW very well might have invented a “dog ate my homework” BS story to mask his despair over his “utter shite soda pop commerical sounding piece of crap” draft, but he’s told the story any number of times. I found it on the BBC, the Daily Mail, Playbill, his own website…and yet, John is still more or less unpersuaded that a cat peeing in the motherboard of a digital piano could completely fry the motherboard. Maybe I should let him talk to Ginger? [...]
