The great Merv Griffin has passed away today at age 82.
Some of the most vivid memories of when I was a kid were of coming home from school in the afternoons, watching Match Game at 3pm and then The Merv Griffin Show at 4pm.
He had a myriad of great performances on that show, but what always stood out in my mind were the interview segments. He took a sincere interest in what each guest had to say. It was obvious he wasn’t just killing time until the next commercial break. He really loved what he was doing, which showed, and seemed truly fascinated with every minute of it.
Each time an icon passes, it gives me pause. The greats of the past are slipping away, and my mind always goes back to that George Jones song, “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” (if you’ve never heard this song, click “play” below…it’s pure country) …perhaps when my daughter is my age, she’ll feel the same way about the entertainers of today…I can’t see how, though. Things just aren’t the same now.
Farewell, Merv. Farewell to another piece of my childhood.

He was Brilliant; he made it “by Being Nice!”
yes he truly was one of the greats, an icon of a television age that has long gone by. He had the greatest talent on his show. I too remember coming home from school and watching him in the afternoons. He made my day. Bless you Merv, thanks for all the wonderful times!
I was also a big (child) fan of Merv. Although I watched the Mike Douglas show, Merv had the more ’sophisticated’ show, I thought.
