Funeral Fit for a Queen

Today I had the honor of attending the “Home-Going Celebration” of Dottie Rambo. Many Christians (and others) refer to funerals as “celebrations” or death as a person’s “home-going” because while we do indeed mourn the loved one’s passing, we believe they are finally home. We celebrate the life they led here among us as well as the fact that they are rejoicing on the other side.

I only go to funerals when I really feel strongly about attending, because they sometimes bring back painful memories for me. However, even with it clocking in at 2.5 hours, I’ve gotta tell ya…the service could have gone on another few hours, and I would’ve been just fine. I hope it isn’t tacky to say this, but it was truly the most amazing funeral I have ever been to.

The music…oh my…how could the music not be incredible considering every song performed was written by Dottie.

For me personally, I felt a running theme throughout the service — Reconciliation.

When Landy and Joy Gardner sang the opening song for the service, the tears started flowing for me. You see, for those of you who do not know a lot about Gospel music…well, I will just say that there’s history between the Gardners and the Rambos. There have been a lot of years of healing, and I believe that this event has added even more balm to smooth out the old scab just wonderfully. To say that my heart was full to see this demonstration of grace would be an understatement.

If there is anybody on this planet who knows how to put together a meaningful and beautiful display of love…whether it’s a home, a church service, a wedding, funeral…anything…Landy is the man. He is simply the best. I could see his touch throughout the entire event, and again, I believe only God’s healing grace could have led to this day.

Dony then made some opening remarks, thanking all of the churches that came together to help them through these tragic circumstances. He said that within hours of the accident, Pastor Hardwick of Christ Church offered to them that whatever they needed facilities-wise or anything, “the answer is ‘yes’.”

What truly touched me in what Dony said was how much he appreciated all who have said to them, “Sorry for your loss.” however, when you know where something is, it can’t be lost. Indeed, Dottie is not lost by any means. I had never thought of it that way.

They then had a time of prayer for those who could not be there today due to the injuries they sustained in the bus accident. Here, I’d like to give a shout-out to Larry from Cleve…they are old buddies from the Dollywood days. Get well quickly, Larry. We’re thinking of you.

Dottie’s granddaughters, Destiny and Dionne, both of whom have grown into such beautiful women — I used to “babysit” Dionne long, long ago…well, ok, not that long ago (hee!) — they sang a duet: “I Will Lift You There.”

Another moment of reconciliation was when Bishop Jim Swilley gave the obituary. Another bit of history is that Dottie went through a divorce from Buck Rambo back in 1994. When Bishop Swilley completed the recitation of the family members, he said, “I would also like to, with your permission, honor the great Buck Rambo and his wife, Mae, in the spirit of reconciliation. Selah.”

I’m glad he did that…to pretend a spouse of 40+ years never existed wouldn’t have seemed right. The spirit in which the Bishop Swilley made that gesture was perfect.

The Obituary was followed by pianist Dino Kartsonakis performing “Behold the Lamb” and then the beautiful Barbara Mandrell gave a brief eulogy entitled, “Setting the Stage.” Something that touched me about what Barbara said, about how Dottie would always downplay when anyone would try to compliment her, and she would turn the attention right back to whoever was giving the compliment…I’d say Barbara learned that trait very well herself, as I’ll never forget the day I met her. We were in Ronnie Milsap’s studio break room, and when we were introduced she said, “Oh, I hate you!” I, of course, was in shock that one of my singing idols was saying this to me! Then she said, “Your hair! I hate you because you have the prettiest hair! I want that hair!” lol! I couldn’t believe that Barbara Mandrell was complimenting me! Let me also say that she looks just as beautiful as she did in the 80s. The woman does not age…I was right beside her after the service and saw no sign of surgery, either! The woman is a true gem. She gave a beautiful eulogy and truly honored her dear friend.

Then, Bill Gaither directed a choir of artists as they sang many of Dottie’s most well-known songs, such as “Sheltered In The Arms of God,” “If That Isn’t Love,” and “I Go To The Rock” and The Issacs took my breath away with “Mama’s Teaching Angels How To Sing”. Their harmonies and precision were absolutely impeccable.

Pastor Hardwick then said a few words of honor about the days back when he was Dottie’s pastor, and how he was honored to watch her as she wrote a song riding in the car with him!

Dottie’s grandson, Israel, put together a touching video presentation of Dottie through the years that brought much applause at the end.

Another highlight was when little 8-year-old Christian Ferguson (Larry’s son) sang “Stand By The River”…wow! That little boy is going to be an entertainer! He sang with perfect pitch, rhythm, and even had a little groove going there…what a cutie!

Yet another moment of restoration was when Bishop Carlton Pearson spoke, and read special messages to the family from various distinguished people. It was great to see him there.

He read a letter to the family from Lily Tomlin in which she reminisced about sharing dinner with Dottie and recording “Mama’s Teaching Angels How To Sing” for “A Prairie Home Companion“…what a sweet letter it was. He also spoke of the letters from Bishop T.D. Jakes, Senator Bob Corker, and Governor Phil Bredesen.

The moment that truly brought the house down was when Pearson read a letter to the family from President George W. Bush. The President honored Dottie by presenting Reba with the American flag that was flown over the White House on Mother’s Day…which was also the day Dottie passed into glory.

I get chills every time I think about it. What a well-deserved honor for a true great in American music.

The music began again with Lulu Roman singing “I Will Glory In the Cross.” Lulu looks incredible! She had gastric bypass surgery, and has lost something like 190 lbs.! She is also underrated as a singer. Her performance was one of my favorites of the day.

I know this is getting way too long, so I will just mention that among the other highlights for me were Duane Allen and William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys singing a moving rendition of “Too Much To Gain To Lose” and Gloria Gaither reciting “There Has To Be A Song.”

Then, Sandy Patty closed the funeral by singing “We Shall Behold Him” as only she can.

To try and mention all of the honored guests who attended would be an exercise in futility. From Donna Summer to Andre Crouch to…well, how comforting it must be for the family to see such a display of genuine love for their mother, grandmother, sister, aunt…friend.

To sum it all up, it was truly a send-off worthy of the Queen of Gospel Music.

This was a day I will never forget…a day that the Lord truly made.

…and it was good.

Edited to add: The Tennessean has a video montage this morning of some of the highlights you read about here, as well as an article by Beverly Keel and a photo slideshow!

  3. I will truly miss Dottie Rambo, as she is/was one of my favorite singer and musician! Back in the 70’s she used to come to Denver to sing at Phipps Auditorium @ City Park and it was always a packed out house! My two sisters belonged to a group called The New Horizons, and sang at a concert with Dottie there at Phipps. I still have and cherish some of her older albums, I still have my turntable and listen to them all the time. Also I have a video from an Easter production that she directed here in Denver some years ago (like in the 80’s) and my daughter was in the children’s portion of that! She was not only beautiful and had the most beautiful smile, but I considered her a genious! It truly was a God given talent and she used it for the Lord! What a legend! Condolences to Reba and Donny and may God continue to bless people with the music that she has left behind for us all!!

  4. Thank you so much for giving a play-by-play of Dottie’s homegoing service for those of us who could not attend. What a blessing! I hope we get to see it on video eventually.

  5. Great article…and thanks for what you wrote about my additional comment. I felt like it was the right thing to do, for exactly the reason that you stated…

    God is good…

    Peace to you…

  6. Great recap! I was the blond sitting next to Allison Lynn at the service. :) Neither one of you mentioned the “Elvis” sighting at the funeral. LOL But I agree with you that the highlight was when the letter from President Bush was read. WOW…incredible!

  7. What will this old world do without the ministry of Dottie Rambo? I am sure that God will raise someone up….but she left a wonderful legacy of faithfulness, grace, and commitment to Jesus that has been unparalleled.

Her music moves me…it always has…it always will.

    Thanks for the wonderful blog.

  8. Thank you so much for details of Ms.Dottie’s homegoing celebration. Oh what a celebration it was.All I can say is thank you……

  9. This funeral, as you said, was absolutely the most awesome event I have ever been witness to. Dottie was an amazing person, who truly touched the hearts and spirits of anyone who listened to her songs. What I remember more than even her gift is her utter abandonment of self and the Love of God which poured forth from her.
Over 30 years from our first meeting, I realized that:

THE GIFT THAT SHE HAD BEEN GIVEN IS THE GIFT SHE ACTUALLY BECAME…

Wrote two poems for her, wanted to share:

    BROKEN, NO MORE

Broken in body, yet strong in the Faith
Walking towards Glory, faithful to wait
For God’s outstretched hand, to lift her in spirit
To her place in Heaven – Yes, she could hear it

Brokenhearted, she had cried out for so long
Asking God for assistance, to help her stay strong
All she had witnessed, enduring such pain
As no one could imagine – Knowing her gain

Would be found to be glorious in God’s eyes
She forged on, determined to evermore rise
Nothing defeated her, in terms of this world
For she wrote for the Master
    His voice, only, she heard…..

Broken in spirit, a vessel outpoured
All that she had, she gave to the Lord
Who she became was so obviously displayed
A ‘friend of God’ – By His hands, uniquely made

Through all of her brokenness, a sweetness came
As the decades passed, she kept speaking His Name
Now she is with Him, and stands BROKEN, no more
Transformed by His Spirit to Heavenly Shores

Her body is strong, her heart is healed, her spirit restored
As she stands in the presence of our Living Lord
Redeemed and resurrected – She is broken, no more
Her influence and legacy to us, evermore
Remains with the masses still dwelling on earth
Within our hearts, of inestimable worth

Dottie: I loved you so much and grieved over your broken heart
Now your heart is healed and my own is broken…….

    PROMOTION

    I requested a celebration
    No mourning, lamenting for me
For I wanted everyone to understand
This was a PROMOTION – a Grand Jubilee
My spirit so longed for His coming
I watched for Him every single day
I could feel the Holy Spirit’s wooing
Each time I bowed my head to pray
The fetters which for so long had held me
Burst asunder – And my soul took flight
Immediately, I stood in His Presence
No darkness anymore – but Everlasting Light

    Celebration is what I requested
    Knowing that my legacy
Would lead generations to His Throne
While I cast my crowns at His feet
No longer would I wake to struggle
    Facing another day of pain
Now, I stand- Healed and strong
    in His Presence
    Evermore, to remain!!

Released from the prison which held me
Redeemed from the curse of the land
    Heaven’s gates granted entrance
To me, when I reached for His hand
    God’s Spirit guided me upward
    His holy angels greeted me
    My family and friends, reunited
    Words cannot describe, you see
What it means to stand before Him
    The One whose sacrifice atoned
Heaven exists just to praise Him
    I realized that I’m finally HOME…..

  12. [...] Update #3: I posted a recap of the wonderful funeral service.  You can read about it by clicking here. [...]

  13. Truly Dottie was a woman of God. She will be missed by all who knew her and the whole world. our sympathy goes to the family. The Rhodes Family. Samson Ala

  14. Carlton Pearson handled the flag with disrespect. He should have left it where it lay, not held it up as if it was a souvenir.

  15. Well, ok, Jane…but I’m sorry that out of the entire service, that’s all you found to comment about.

  16. Daystar had it on Wed, why did they not show all of the service? Just one hour

  17. I just pray the family continues to act with class and dignity. They certainly have so far. But when they wouldn’t allow filming due to “the intimate nature” – READ: this is Israel’s shot at stardom with his camera. I pray that isn’t the case.
After I saw Vestal’s clothing sold on EBay by her family, before she was even cold – well, I wanted to hurl!
    That just isn’t right.

  18. I was one of the fortunate ones to attend Dottie’s celebration and never, ever have I attended ANY service of it’s kind. Just as Dottie was, it was unique and very original. It’s a day that I will replay in my mind for a long time. It was so good to see Buck again. Respect for him has been restored to me for his attending. To sum it up, it was just another day the Lord had made so we all took advantage and rejoiced in the celebration of Dottie Rambo’s life and her welcome into heaven. PRAISE GOD FOR DOTTIE RAMBO’S LIFE! We’ll all see you soon baby.

    Love,
    Len Matthews

  19. There has never been any other singer/songwriter who has influenced gospel music for the number of years that Dottie has. I believe her music will continue to go on until the Lord comes back as it is sung and recorded by thousands. I first saw her sing with a group (Gospel Echoes, I recollect) back in 1965 in a very large Pentecostal church. I have been a fan of hers ever since. I have most of her records, cassettes and CDs. I was privileged to have the honor of Miss Dottie giving concerts in my church for the last two years at Niota First Baptist Church of Niota, TN. Dottie’s in heaven singing with all the greats beholding and praising our wonderful Savior and Lord. Our prayers are with all the families of the Dearest Dottie travel group and hope the Lord soon heals them! Dottie’s songs will never die and Dottie is enjoying eternal life!!! — B.J. Tipton

  20. Dottie, I’m missing you from Kinshasa/DRC, but I do believe we’ll meet in the Glory

  21. Dear Dony, Reba and family,
I am so sorry about the tragic accident of May 31st that took our precious Dottie from us for awhile. However, as you, Reba said when I met you and your family in El Paso, Texas at Benny and Stephanie Hahn’s church, about 10 years ago, no one is lost when you know where they are. And Dony, you have reiterated that in the above message. We all know where Dottie is right now and I’m sure she is singing and teaching the angels how to sing right along beside her mother. We shall all miss her terribly until that day when we join her. How I wish I could have attended her homegoing service and I look forward to the day when it will be released on DVD for all to share. What an honorable tribute to such a beautiful lady who gave each of us so much during her life here on earth. May our LORD comfort and bless each of you and continue to use each of you for His Glory.
Love, Hugs and Prayers, Jeanell Creed (now of Virginia Beach, VA)

  22. I will miss her so. When I listen to her sing, I am proud that she and I were friends. No, we never met, in the physical sense, but in spiritual we were very good friends. WE STILL ARE.

  23. all i can think of is how she preached her own funeral and how a saint finally made it home….i bet her and vestal goodman teamed up the minute she made it home!!!! “IF THAT ISNT LOVE”

  24. I met the Rambos in 1974 when they decided to record my song HE’S READY TO COME, I’M READY TO GO. It was the first song of mine recorded by a nationally known group. I just want to tell how the Rambos, particularly Dottie treated me. When I pitched the song to them they immediately said they would record it. However, Dottie had a suggestion. She said she wanted me to re-write the chorus. She thought the lyric in the chorus could be better. She told me she didn’t want to give me any ideas about how to re-write it….she just wanted me to do it. So I completely re-wrote the lyric of the chorus and sent it to them. A few months later they called and invited me to Nashville to be in the studio when they recorded it. It was a wonderful experience. The amazing thing was, beside the fact that the best writer in Gospel music was recording a song of mine (it would be released as a single and go to the top of the charts, and they opened their show with it for nearly two years), she could have re-written the chorus herself and claimed most of the royalties but she didn’t. She wanted me to do it. I knew nothing about the music business and could have easily been taken advantage of but Dottie Rambo didn’t let that happen. I’ve always respected her for that and she and the Rambos have remained friends ever since. My prayers and love to Reba, Dony, Buck and family. Dottie my friend, RIP.

Because of His Majesty I am…The Bunnea

  26. I was so saddened yet relieved to know that our Great Lady, Dottie, had gone on to Heaven. Also, I only learned of this yesterday on a trip to Missouri when my sister in law said, “We will be in Mt. Vernon soon, that’s where Dottie Rambo died.” My, I was taken back by that statement. I haven’t watched a lot of TV, and was not told of her leaving us until September 20th.

As I pondered all the facts, and knowing how she had suffered in her body the past few years, I was happy to know she was not suffering anymore, but with Jesus.

She was an inspiration, and I know she has many souls to her credit (Jewels in her Crown of Glory) because of her obedience to the Lord and the great Talent/Gift she had and used for the Kingdom of God.

God Bless all those her music has touched and are still living here, that they will be saved and see her again one day.

I send my regards, and Love in Christ Jesus to the family and personal friends. As she would say, “Look Up, Your Redemption Draweth Nigh.”
