Tim Russert

Tim Russert has passed away today of a heart attack. He passed at work.

I’m thinking about his family right now.

Gone at 58. My dad was 54…too young for the both of them.

Once again, the news broke on Twitter before it even made CNN.

Here are some reactions from my fellow Tweeters

vibinc @newscoma Why am I tearing up? That’s seriously messed up.

newscoma @vibinc I’m stunned too. Seriously in shock. Russert was amazing to me. I feel bad for his family.

jimdye Oh no! Tim Russert died of a heart attack today!

TupeloRob OMG Tim Russert is dead!

stephaniediva the anchor on NBC sounds really choked up while talk about Tim Russert.. like he’s holding back tears.

r Tom Brokaw is displaying his unique story telling skills — celebrating his friend and colleague.

missbethd man… he was the only person I could bear to listen to regarding this election. I grew up watching NBC news with my dad — this is a huge loss.

rachel_w @newscoma damn

jaxn The 2008 election just go a little less interesting. :(

Busymom So sad watching Tom Brokaw talk about Tim Russert.

joelance sad day: Tim Russert has died.

christyfrink tim russert was like… my hero.

cpNashville Tim Russert. Requiescat in pace. Elections seasons won’t be the same (or AS SANE) without you.

ariedana RIP Tim Russert :( My condolences to @newmediajim and the rest of the NBC News family. What a tough loss.

FrankStrovel NYPost: “Sources say NBC allowed itself to be scooped by other media outlets as it tried to contact Russert’s wife Maureen & family”.

jprestonian I’ll never forget Russert’s testimony in the Libby trial. “… always consider conversations off-the-record, unless otherwise indicated”

dzinerchic very sad news about Tim Russert.

FrankStrovel Grateful for MSNBC’s live streaming. And for lap tops and WiFi. And for my Dad. And not in that order.

missbethd for those of you who remember John Chancellor, Russert always reminded me of him – unique voice & journalistic character

Busymom NBC staff covering this are killing me. So sad. They are so poised.

ariedana There are a few great journalists that folks in the biz continue to look up to. Russert is one of the ones at the top of the list.

MarsPhoenix Godspeed Tim Russert. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25145431/

marquesstewart Wow, Tim Russert passed away today. I couldn’t believe it when I heard this. Sad day in the news media.

WonderDawg777 Re Tim Russert – Everybody go book a physical. NOW. I am on the calendar for July 18. How about an accountability challenge?

ColeH Just learned of Tim Russett’s passing via Twitter. I’m totally shocked. Such sad news…

FrankStrovel After hearing what a Buffalo Bills fan Tim Russert was, I’m feeling guilty about the Music City Miracle. City of Buffalo is lowering flags.

LakeNeuron KO is going a good job, I think. It can’t be easy. As @newscoma said, I think MSNBC has a duty to honor their colleague.

dzinerchic Sundays won’t be the same without Tim Russert.

jaxn Listening to John Seigenthaler speak. He was scheduled to have dinner with Russert next week and is getting choked up.

brittneyg Wolf Blitzer just called Russert “a journalist’s journalist.” An apt description, no doubt, and the reason for the media saturation today.

newmediajim wow.. i stepped away from the TWitter for a while. you guys are the best! :) lovely, kind thoughts for Russert family and NBC family. THANK YOU ALL!!! :)

Kleinheider @brittneyg Russert was the working man’s journalist not the journalist’s journalist. A 1940’s journalist’s journalist, maybe.

idreamahwy Just got back. Heard on the way about Russert. Wish I’d been on here to get you guys’ perspectives. Hurt my feelings :( .

AndersonCooper My sincerest condolences to the family and all those who were close to Tim Russert. It’s rare that you find a man who was universally liked.

kateanon Busy AM, came home to no power; took a nap. Just now getting VM and realizing what happened. My father was friends with him, this is tragic

  1. Condolences for his family and friends.

Unfortunately, I have to fault Russert (and the DC beltway media’s respect for him) for the steady decline of political discourse in the mainstream media. His testimony in the Libby trial indicated the standard creedo in the beltway: If they report “both sides,” and print/broadcast it, they feel as if they’ve done their jobs. Nothing has been as detrimental to informing the American public in my lifetime as this chumminess between pols and media personalities.

  3. Oh, for heaven’s sake. Exactly one day Timothy John Russert, Jr. came home from Italy, he went over the wild blue yonder (meaning went Home to be with the Lord). It was shocking. Best wishes. God bless him and his family.

  4. Pay your tribute to the great Tim Russert at our non-profit, http://www.tributefund.org.

  5. He was like your best friend, you trusted him…colesteral, colesteral the downfall with colesteral….check it out.

  6. It’s really something that he got to do what most people never get to do on the last; he talked with the Pope the other day, but what a Fathers Day this will be for his Dad and his son!

  7. Never liked politics until JFK came into it. Never studied politics until Tim made it understandable, fun, and very interesting. His attitude was infectious. Even if you don’t agree with the candidates, at least we have the chance to be a part of something that is going to lead our country in the future! Wake up America, take care of your health, and get involved in what we want in our country. Be a part of the solution. I’m going to miss him and his shows. Our hearts go out to his family. We rejoice in seeing how he lived, and loved, and everything he stood for, and taught to others.

  8. My prayers are with his dad, wife and son. How very sad!

  9. It is hard to believe that such a vibrant man has left us. God has chosen to call Tim home. He will be missed but we have been blessed to have him with us for his 58 years. God Bless his family.

  10. It’s sad he has to die so sudden. Read he was at work when he collapsed. It’s like he never really slept when he was working. Appeared on “Meet the Press” on Sundays, then on the Today show then at night as well. We’ll all die someday, but his death is so sudden and that makes it more sad. Condolences to his family.

  11. Haven’t we been blessed to have known Mr. Russert, even from afar.
I’m sure his family knows that, although not visible, he will always be
    with them.

  12. I am so very deeply saddened at the sudden, premature passing of this wonderful man. He was truly a shining star in his profession and will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Maureen, son Luke (another “class act”), and his much loved Dad, “Big Russ”, and sisters. My sympathies also to his collegues who are obviously in much pain today as well. God Bless you Tim. Heaven will welcome you with open arms.

  13. It is an amazing human experience how a “stranger” can touch our lives so profoundly. My thoughts and prayers to out to Mr. Russert’s family and friends, and to all who seek healing in this moment.

The “timing” of Mr. Russert’s passing was certainly not lost on me. It certainly fueled my passion to continue encouraging people to have the “death bed” conversation with their loved ones now… before it’s too late.

We tend to take the easy road through life. So I know it’s uncomfortable for some to think of saying goodbye to a loved one…especially to one of our parents … and especially to say goodbye before they age, get sick and pass away.

I can only speak of my own experience of having had the ‘death bed’ conversation with my Dad months before his sudden death. But I can assure you of two things: First, wounds of the past can be healed; and secondly, having your say (before it’s too late) will help tremendously through your grieving process. The peace you will receive for having said all “those things” is beyond words. Personally, I think it helps their passing as well.

Why be left behind living with regrets? Do it now…before it’s too late!

    take care,

  14. I will miss Tim greatly. Not a week went by without watching Meet the Press (as I called it Meet the Depressed). Not because of Tim but because of our “state of affairs”.

I never realized what a kind, generous human being he was and how he touched so many lives including my own. I hope to live up to his standards as a celebration of his life.

Thank you Tim and we will miss you deaply.

  15. wonder if tim had another family like charles kuralt….LOL…………………….hey Luke, here is your brother and sister….LOL
