I woke up this morning to hear of the passing of one of America’s great comedians, George Carlin.
He always cracked me up with his “Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?” bits on the quirks of the English language. Or the one I lovingly dedicate to my ex-father-in-law: “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.” hee!
My earliest memories of him are on the TV show “Laugh In” and my most recent are of him dogging religion on his last HBO special. I hate that he was so bitter at the end of his life. I hope maybe he found some peace in his final moments.
All of those years he didn’t believe there was a God…well, as we all eventually will…now he knows if there’s one or not.
There are a lot of great posts around the blogosphere today about ‘ol George, so here’s a round up:
I’ve gotta give 5 stars to Holly’s, an excellent read…go read it.
Also, go read these excellent posts:
I love this simple illustration from “Indexed“…

I can’t even blog about this, I’m too depressed.
Wow, that’s a huge compliment–thanks
.
He was “Just the Best”, but I didn’t know he was bitter!
And now, Dody Goodman has died, too! I remember her on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar, before Johnny Carson, even!!! (She was in “Grease” and many other things, too)!
Well done.
There’s a lot about him on blogs over here too, in little old England. But, I have to confess. I don’t think I have ever heard of him. His name doesn’t ring any bells. If Gingersnaps is referring to Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In, I have seen that so maybe I saw him on there without recognising his name.
I have just seen a clip of him in action on a British blog. His style reminds me of the Big Yin, Billy Connelly. This being the case, I suspect it will have been the latter copying rather than the other way around.
I imagine him turning up at the gates of heaven and St Peter responding “For years you have been calling God the invisible man, and now you want to see him?”.
Anyone who missed seeing George (once again), last night on HBO 2, missed the “BEST Laughs in the world!” He really WAS the Best, all the way back to the Ed Sullivan TV show in the 1950’s! So worth missing everything else on TV, just to watch him in action, one more time!
He cracked me up too. But he really did turn mean.
