Isaac Hayes: Takin’ Soulsville to the Sky

The world just lost a little bit of its funk with the death of Isaac Hayes today.

While you younger folks know him as “Chef” on South Park, I remember him as the Grammy Award and Academy Award winning composer of one of the funkiest and coolest of cool songs of all time, the theme from the movie “Shaft.” mmmhmmm…

Back in 1996, I had the opportunity to be one of the production assistants for the Tennessee Bicentennial Celebration which featured Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Brenda Lee, The Nashville Symphony, Al Gore…and yes…Isaac Hayes. I was privileged to work backstage and got to meet him & shake the man’s hand.

He was a proud Tennessean, born in Covington, TN, and he died a Tennessean, in Memphis.

And so it goes…today I raise my glass to another member of Rock and Roll Royalty to leave us…Isaac Hayes. May he rest in peace.
