Country Music Awards: Tweets and Random Thoughts…

I had a great time live-Tweeting the CMA Awards last night.  I have decided that whenever there is any kind of interesting event happening on TV, I will have my laptop ready with Twitter running.  It’s like having a party in my living room without having to wash dishes afterward.

I thought it was a decent show.  Not the best by any means, but it wasn’t heinous.  Yesterday afternoon, there was panic in downtown Nashville as 3 of 4 transformers had blown out, and it was high drama!

  • nitweet nitweet NEWSDESK: NES called to say 3 of 4 transformers feeding the CMAs power have blown. Will take 6 hours to fix. D-R-A-M-A!

But finally, they diverted power from other local businesses so that the show could go on.

The major faux paus of the evening goes to their entertainment reporter who was interviewing Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman, and to Keith specifically about playing with Brad Paisley on stage tonight (for the show opener), he actually said, “So this will be the first time you’ve played with him sober?

Both Urban and Kidman looked mortified, as he tried to backtrack out of his words.

After the highly publicized time that Urban spent in drug and alcohol rehab, what a disrespectful, appalling thing to say.  Yikes.

Anyway, the show started off with that duet, and they really kicked it.  They are both great guitar players in their own right, as well as entertainers.

Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosted the show.  Carrie changed dresses, like 48 times during the show.  Brad was funny and entertaining.  I thought they did a really fine job.  However, I miss Vince Gill.

The first time I did a “Squee!” during the show was when Hugh Jackman came out to present an award with Nicole Kidman, and I was not alone:

Then, the award…

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps Congratulations to George Strait! Single of the Year for “I Saw God Today”…beautiful song. Well deserved.

Then, Kellie Pickler…

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps Dear Kelly Pickler, please find the pitch. Love, GingerSnaps.

GingerSnaps: Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus presenting Song of the Year…goes to: “Stay” Jennifer Nettles!!!!!! WOW! That is really amazing!

Then, Miranda Lambert...Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps: Miranda Lambert: A woman you don’t want to piss off.

Lady Antebellum performed, and through that, I found out something about one of my new blogger friends…

Then, we were treated to our annual Martina McBride oversing…

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps Am I being too jaded if I say “Meh” about Martina McBride’s performance?

A couple of friends agreed:

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps Rascal Flatts wins Vocal Group of the Year! Well deserved…after seeing their live show. Great. Show.

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps I wonder if Rascal Flatts ponders the magnitude of the fact that they just beat out the Eagles on an award?
  • judywriter Rascal Flatts is of this generation, the Eagles really are from an earlier one (mine, actually)

Then, Kid Rock performs Warren Zevon’s, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s his song …

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps wonders if Kid Rock is allowed to say “We were smokin’ funny things.” on tee vee?

On the script & hosting:

  • Square_normalGingerSnaps @CountryMusic Suggestion for script writers:have hosts acknowledge the previous performer. It’s too choppy the way they move along!
  • CountryMusic: @GingerSnaps – noted but sometimes things get cut to get back on time. You should see the stage crew running like crazy back here.
  • Square_normalGingerSnaps @CountryMusic Ah, I’ve been back there a few times…I’m hear ya. I’ve just noticed it a few times tonight. Seems “dismissive” imho.

On George Strait:

  • judywriter Let’s see, what other George uses spray-on tan? George Hamilton! King of the tans!
  • Square_normalGingerSnaps Wow!!! George Strait & Tony Brown (Producer) win Album of the Year for “Troubadour” … Go King George!
  • Square_normalGingerSnaps @SandySmile I think Alison Krauss/Robert Plant should have gotten Album of the Year. It’s an amazing project.

On the introduction to Carrie Underwood’s “This is Just A Dream” by the wife of a fallen soldier and the incredible performance itself…

  • Nancy Sutherland nancymk yes, she can. But aren’t you crying? so emotional!

  • Nancy Sutherland nancymk I’ve been a fan of Carrie since American Idol. How many years now female vocalist CMA? I think 3??

  • Square_normalGingerSnaps Annnnd a very dapper Vince Gill presents Female Vocalist Vocalist of the Year to Carrie Underwood…if anybody thinks it isn’t deserved…puh-lease.

About Jennifer Nettle’s wardrobe:

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps Stolen from commenter on FB: “Cher called. she wants her gypsies, tramps and thieves outfit back.”
  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps YEAH…nice zing with the $150K for wardrobe reference there, Brad! hee! (Brad Paisley to Carrie Underwood about her wardrobe changes.)
  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps thinks the Eagles were the best dressed artists of the night. I love a sharp dressed man. 5 are even better!
joelance: @GingerSnaps that kind of talk will get you unfollowed. You have seen The Big Lebowski, I take it? (I’m just giving you a hard time.)

Me: clueless

joelance: @GingerSnaps anything praising the f!%#ing Eagles, man!

And finally…

  • Ginger Snaps GingerSnaps The lovely & talented Shania Twain presents Entertainer of the Year to Kenny Chesney.

mr_shiny Sounds like you had a blast with the CMA’s last night! Thanks for watching and reporting so I didn’t have to. :)

Updated to Add: Kudos to @WKRN for having their entertainment reporter do an on-air apology on their 6pm newscast for his inappropriate remark to Keith Urban last night.  I’m all for giving credit where credit is due, so good on ‘em!

  1. Thanks Ginger! Missed it (kid stuff) but feel like I was there… You’d be a fine reporter!

  2. I’ve been watching the CMA”s for about 20 years now and I thought this years CMA’s were horrible! Thank God Carrie and Brad can read cue cards! There was absolutely no spontaniety at all! The CMA officials really need to beg Vince Gill to come back and host. At least his jokes are funny and he doesn’t have to read cue cards. The show was so disjointed too.

  3. Loveee country music. It makes my day!
