Hurt

I hurt myself today,
to see if I still feel.
I focus on the pain,
the only thing that’s real.
The needle tears a hole,
the old familiar sting.
Try to kill it all away,
but I remember everything.

What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
my empire of dirt.

I will let you down,
I will make you hurt.

I wear this crown of thorns,
upon my liar’s chair.
Full of broken thoughts,
I cannot repair.
Beneath the stains of time,
the feelings disappear.
You are someone else.
I am still right here.

What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
my empire of dirt.

I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.

If I could start again,
a million miles away.
I would keep myself.
I would find a way.

  1. I remember hearing NIN do this in 95, then Cash covered it, and it sounded like Trent was mocking his own song.
Only Cash can do this song. It’s his song. Trent should, and graciously, did give it to him. It belongs to no one else–because with Cash doing it, it belongs to everyone else.

No one else can sing this song but JC.

  2. Totally agree with Sharon Cobb, Johnny’s video/cover of this is the bomb.

  3. Cash’s song is the saddest song ever. Sharon is right. Cash made this. Second saddest song is Pontiac by Lyle Lovett to me.

Hope you start feeling better Ginger.

  4. Hugs to you Ginger. Hope you feel better and everything is ok soon.

On a side note, this was Reznor’s last song at Bonnaroo, the last US NIN show ever. I got teary.

  5. ((hugs)) to you…Hang in there girl, you’ll get through this.

  6. You’ve had a few extra challenges this past year. ~Hoping the bright spots get big enough for you to reach for your sunglasses…

  7. I hope you’re okay – in fact, I know you’re having fun in KY right now!
